New Zealand cyclist Shane Archbold has been forced out of the Tour de France after crashing and breaking his pelvis.Riding for German team Bora-Argon 18, the 27-year-old Timaru rider crashed into a wall 105km into the 17th stage on the descent after the second climb up the category three Col des Mosses.The team website said Archbold was travelling at about 80km/h when he came off, with nearly 80km of the stage from Berne in Switzerland to a mountain-top finish at Finhaut-Emosson still remaining.He was examined by the tour doctor before remounting and struggling through to finish the stage in the grupetto at the back of the field, nearly 40 minutes behind the leaders.Bora-Argon said further examination showed Archbold, who won gold in the scratch race at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games two years ago, had a broken pelvis.The fracture is stable but he has to retire from the Tour de France.
