Jumping legend Sir Anthony McCoy has backed former Olympic cycling champion Victoria Pendletons bid to ride at Cheltenham next month. Pendletons hopes of riding in the Foxhunters Chase at the Festival in March suffered a blow when she was unseated when making her racecourse debut at Fakenham on Friday.Former champion jockey John Francome reacted by branding Pendleton, who 12 months ago had never even sat on a horse, as an accident waiting to happen and suggested she wants saving from herself. Pendleton departs company with Pacha Du Polder at Fakenham However, McCoy, who rode a record 4,358 winners and was champion jockey a record 20 consecutive times, disagrees.I dont think anyone will let her take part if they feel shes not ready for it, McCoy told Sky Sports News HQ.I think she was a little bit unlucky at Fakenham to get the fall that she did, shes had about eight, nine or 10 riding point-to-points and shes managed to get round. Theres no doubt a little bit more time would do her no harm. Former Jockey AP McCoy believes Pendleton should be given her chance to ride in next months Foxhunters Chase I know John Francome said he thought she was a danger to herself, but Ive seen a lot more people more incompetent than Victoria Pendleton is.Pendleton returned to the saddle on Sunday to ride in a point point-to-point race in Suffolk and finished last of six runners. Pendleton back in the saddle Victoria Pendleton competes in point-to-point race following Fakehham fall The 35-year-old admitted afterwards that she could be forced to delay her dream of riding at one of the biggest race meetings of the calendar, but insisted she does not plan on quitting the saddle altogether. If Im not ready, Im not ready. Ultimately there are a group of experts behind me and I will trust their judgement 100 per cent and if its not meant to be this year then its not meant to be, Pendleton told the Racing Post. Pendleton won gold and silver on the track at London 2012 It makes no odds if I do it again another time and Id like to see anyone else give it a go and get this far. Whatever happens Ill continue pointing as I really enjoy it and I even started designing my own silks the other day. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Irish cyclist Nicolas Roche says he developed a serious case of bacterial pneumonia while in Brazil for the Olympic road race and will miss the Spanish Vuelta.Roche suggested on Twitter he may have gotten sick from a bad aircon in Rio, though he did not say how he knew his illness was caused by air conditioning. He also did not specify whether it was from a unit in the Olympic village, where he stayed with the rest of the Irish team.Riding the Vuelta was a big target for me this year and I was looking forward to being part of the team, Roche said. The illness couldnt have come at a worse time, really, and after speaking to the medical staff, its pretty clear that Im not going to be ready in time. The Olympic Council of Ireland, the countrys Olympic committee, said it was not aware of any medical concerns made by Roche during or after his stay with the team. Our athletes are our No. 1 priority and we have not received any complaints, the council said in a statement.Roche competed in the road race in support of countryman Dan Martin onn the first full day of competition at the Rio Games.ddddddddddddHe finished 29th after dropping a chain on the base of the final climb. His pro team, Team Sky, confirmed Roche will miss the Vuelta. The potential for illness has been a major concern in Rio, though mostly because of the Zika virus and water quality. The Vuelta is the third of cyclings three Grand Tours, following the Giro dItalia and the Tour de France. And it was the one Roche has been targeting most of the season, building toward not only the Olympics but the mountainous race in Spain.Roche said he was gutted to miss the race, which begins with a team time trial Aug. 20. Doctors have prescribed eight full days of rest before Roche can get back on a bike. He hopes to compete again before the end of the season. The Vuelta is a race I really enjoy and one where I have had success before, he said. Ill be focusing on my recovery and getting back as soon as I can. ' ' '
