MARINA BAY, Singapore -- Nico Rosberg took an eight-point lead in the drivers championship with a superb victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, holding off intense late pressure from the charging Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo to secure his third win in a row.Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished third after a late strategy call shuffled him ahead of Kimi Raikkonen but inadvertently blew the race between Rosberg and Ricciardo wide open. Raikkonen had to settle for fourth despite overtaking Hamilton for position on track earlier in the race, with Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel mounting an impressive comeback drive from last to fifth, ahead of Red Bulls Max Verstappen in sixth. Fernando Alonso secured seventh for McLaren ahead of Sergio Perez, who adopted a clever strategy to jump from 18th on the grid to eighth at the end of the race. A spirited drive from Daniil Kvyat was rewarded with two points in ninth ahead of Renaults Kevin Magnussen who took the last point on offer in tenth. The story of the raceIt was a Hamilton pit stop on lap 45 that transformed a processional race into a nail-biting finish. The world champion had lost position to Raikkonen at Turn 10 12 laps earlier and that forced the Mercedes pit wall to think laterally to try to move him back ahead. Hamilton was shifted from a sedate two-stop strategy on to an aggressive three-stopper, taking on super-softs with 16 laps remaining to try to attack the Ferrari in front. Rather than allow Hamilton to attack on track Ferrari reacted by pitting Raikkonen a lap later, but by that time Hamilton had set a blistering pace on his outlap and the Finn emerged behind the Mercedes as he rejoined the track on fresh rubber. In isolation the strategy worked perfectly for Hamilton, but the Mercedes pit wall probably hadnt have banked on it impacting Rosbergs race a further 10 seconds up the road.By Hamilton and Raikkonen pitting, it effectively opened up second-placed Ricciardos strategy options, allowing him to make an extra pit stop for faster tyres without losing track position. He did just that on lap 47, taking on super-soft tyres and returning to the track in second place, 25 seconds behind Rosberg. The gap appeared to be big at the time but Ricciardo was immediately three seconds per lap faster than Rosberg using his fresher, softer tyres and set about reeling in the leader. The maths was adding up for Ricciardo to close onto Rosbergs gearbox in the final two laps, but a combination of traffic, some solid laps from Rosberg and Ricciardos tyres starting to fade left him just short at the line. With a slim margin of 0.4s, Rosberg just held on to take one of the most memorable wins of his career.Behind the top two Hamilton was also able to hold off Raikkonen for third, after the Finn was unable to forge a repeat of his Turn 10 heroics in the closing stages. Vettels race to fifth revolved around a long stint on softs at the start followed by two attacking stints on ultra-softs to cut through the field. Alonso made up positions during a chaotic start that saw Carlos Sainz swerve to avoid a slow starting Verstappen and clip Nico Hulkenberg, who spun off into the wall. Force India lost one car in the melee but also used the resulting safety car to switch teammate Perez from the ultra-softs to the softs, effectively putting him on a one-stop strategy for the remainder of the race that allowed him to move through the field as others pitted.Verstappen dropped from fourth to eighth as a result of his bad start and had to engage in a series of heated battles to work his way back up to sixth by the end of the race. Two of those battles happened to be with the man he replaced at Red Bull earlier this year, Daniil Kvyat, and provided much of the entertainment in the early part of the race as the Russian gave hardly any room -- and even less respect -- for the Red Bull behind. Verstappen finally made the move stick and went on to pull a solid move on Alonso for seventh. Scarpe Air Max2 Light Scontate .
